About the Rink

The Rink at State Street is a winterseason, public, outdoor ice rink situated on the State House lawn in downtown Montpelier, Vermont. The rink is operated by the City of Montpelier in coordination with Montpelier Alive and community volunteers.

The rink is intended for open skating. Hockey or broomball are not permitted at any time.

The rink has been approved for this winter only. Its future is dependent upon its safe and successful operation this season. We hope you skate on the rink, enjoy it, and encourage others to use it too. Please obey the rink rules to ensure its success.

Monitored Hours for 2016-2017 Winter Season

The rink will be lit with Rink Monitors on site during the following days/hours:

Wednesday         3:00-7:00 PM
Thursday             3:00-7:00 PM
   Friday                 3:00-7:00 PM
Saturday                12:00-7:00 PM
 Sunday                  12:00-7:00 PM

There are no monitored rink hours on Mondays or Tuesdays.

Rink Rules

        Use skating rink at own risk 

        No hockey or broomball are allowed

        Helmets are recommended 

        Guardians are responsible for children 

        Smoking and alcohol use is prohibited 

Duties of Skaters

        Comply with each posted sign or warning that relates to the behavior and responsibility of the ice skater.

        Not act in a manner that may cause injury to others.

        Obey instructions given by the Rink Monitor.

        Maintain reasonable control over the speed and direction of the ice skater's skating at all times.

        Be reasonably aware of other ice skaters or objects to avoid colliding with other ice skaters or objects.

        Skate within the ice skater's ability to control the intended direction of skating.

Where To Find Skates

Onion River Sports on Langdon Street in Montpelier sells, rents, and tunes recreational ice skates for men, women, and kids. Find a complete line of K2 ice skates for sale, including men’s and women’s models and boy’s and girl’s skates. VT Department of Labor parking lot at 5 Green Mountain Dr. via the Capital Shuttle:

Parking is available at back of the Department of Labor parking lot with Capital Shuttle running to the State House every 20 minutes until 5:20PM. Shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs are in back of the Department of Labor lot and at the Visitor Center across from the State House lawn on State Street. Driving Directions to the Department of Labor Lot: From I-89, take Exit 8 to merge onto Memorial Drive. Stay straight at the light and take your first left into the parking lot before the High School tennis courts. Take the first right and find a spot at the back of the lot. The shuttle to the State House will pick you up there.


No restrooms are provided on site. Public restrooms are available in the Vermont State House during open hours (Monday-Friday; 7:45 AM-4:30 PM) and at the Montpelier City Center located at 89 Main Street. Restrooms are available for patrons at nearby State Street retail establishments.
