The Vermont Historical Society engages both Vermonters and "Vermonters at heart" in the exploration of our state's rich heritage. They believe that an understanding of the past changes lives and builds better communities. The Vermont History Museum in Montpelier includes the core, interactive exhibit, Freedom and Unity: One Ideal, Many Stories, which represents Vermont's history from 1600 to the present. The museum also includes a Local History Gallery, rotating exhibits, and the mid-20th century mural by artist Paul Sample, Salute to Vermont, which depicts three-and-a-half centuries of Vermont history, from 1609 to the late 1950s.

The Vermont Historical Society also operates the Vermont History Center and Leahy Library in Barre.
