Understanding Forest Carbon: How Forests Mitigate Climate Change with Ali Kosiba (IN-PERSON)

Tuesday Mar 5th 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
@ North Branch Nature Center

Understanding Forest Carbon: How Forests Help Us Mitigate Climate Change Part of the Naturalist Journeys 2024 Winter Presentation Series, link here: https://northbranchnaturecenter.org/presentations Tickets Required – Register Here: https://northbranchnaturecenter.app.neoncrm.com/eventReg.jsp?event=1244& Learn all about forests and the carbon they sequester and store. Dr. Kosiba will showcase the complex forest carbon cycle, from living trees down to the soil. She’ll also provide insights into the role that Vermont’s forests have in helping us mitigate the impacts of climate change. But because forests themselves face numerous stressors, she’ll provide options we can use to help forests sustain this critical benefit. About Ali Kosiba: Dr. Alexandra (Ali) Kosiba is a forest ecophysiologist and Extension Assistant Professor of Forestry at the University of Vermont. As the Extension Forester, she creates resources and conducts applied research to help landowners, foresters, and decision-makers better understand the impacts of climate change and other stressors on Vermont’s forests and management techniques to improve forest resilience. Ali serves as a regional educator on forest carbon science and management and is the state lead on the Vermont Forest Carbon Inventory. She also works on various forest health topics, like planning and management for at risk tree species, land planning for maintaining critical forest services, and forest monitoring. Before coming to UVM, she was the Climate Forester for the State of Vermont, Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation – and the first climate forester in the nation. In-person presentations require free tickets. In-person events will also be livestreamed on our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfNmpEm1udq3AG2Blpn8Yog

Irish Storytelling at Woodbelly Pizza

Friday Mar 22nd 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm
@ 79 Barre Street, Montpeleir VT

Come down to Woodbelly Pizza and gather round for a night of enchantment with the mesmerizing tales spun by storytelling duo, Sorcha & Aron of @CandlelitTales. Hailing from the rolling hills of Ireland, the Hegarty siblings have been breathing life into ancient Irish myths since 2014 when they started retelling old stories to a near-empty room upstairs in a Dublin pub one rainy evening. The next week, the room was a lot less empty, and the stories were lifted by live music. By the fourth week, the room was full, and so was the hall outside of it.

Event reception for Fairbanks Scales: Weighing the World exhibit

Saturday Mar 30th 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
@ Vermont History Museum, 109 State Street, Montpelier

Join us for a reception for the latest exhibit in our Local History Gallery. Free admission and refreshments. Fairbanks Scales: Weighing the World is curated by the St. Johnsbury History & Heritage Center. The exhibit explores how a large scale led to large-scale changes in how the world does business and changed the course of the history of St. Johnsbury, VT. In the early 1800s, the Fairbanks brothers had a problem and Thaddeus devised a solution. His platform scale innovation allowed for wagon loads of materials to be weighed without unloading. The concept was an overnight success and soon the Fairbanks Scale Co. was making scales to weigh everything from a piece of paper to a locomotive. The exhibit features a number of scales, alongside photographs, documents, and ephemera that tell this core St. Johnsbury story.

Improvisation: to compose, play, recite, sing and perform or deliver without previous preparation, on the spur of the moment. Part masterclass, part performance. Learn the fundamentals of improv with cocktails in hand. You’ll explore your creativity, build your self confidence and learn how to be spontaneous. And maybe laugh a little a lot. **Choose to get up on your feet and perform or just be an amazing audience member. (Mostly likely you won’t be able to help yourself and you’ll be up on your feet in no time! If you have questions, reach out to me!) RSVP: https://linktr.ee/antlerimprovlab
