For Wellness Lovers

Curated by Alpenglow Fitness

Our itineraries are sponsored by Capitol Plaza Hotel Montpelier, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.

Health and wellness lovers will feel at home in Montpelier, where whole foods, natural beauty products, fitness, yoga, meditation, and holistic health services flourish.

Central Vermonters have long been interested in health and wellness, in part thanks to Vermont’s emphasis on agriculture, and also as a result of the back-to-the-land movement, when many people moved to Vermont for a lifestyle that was more closely connected to nature. This movement had a profound effect on the area’s health and wellness culture, it’s part of our fabric to use natural alternatives for cleaning and grooming, and to be open to alternative wellness approaches like acupuncture, meditation, and more recently CBD.

Montpelierites also put a strong value on movement and fitness, for its many health benefits as well as a way of connecting socially. The city has mountain bike trails, multiuse (walking, Nordic skiing, snowshoe) trails, a growing bike path and network of bike lanes, several yoga studios, recreation fields, and indoor fitness facilities. You might even find a pop-up ultimate frisbee game giong on the Statehouse lawn.

Montpelier has just about everything for visitors who like to care for their mind, body, and spirit, in conventional and alternative ways.

Where to Shop

Walk into AroMed (8 State) and take a big, deep breath—the smell of the pure, organic, and sustainably wild-harvested essential oils filling the air are an instant mood boost. And that’s just the beginning. Try salves, creams, oils, and CBD products, for various conditions and ailments, for you, your loved ones and even your pets.

Your skin is the body’s largest organ, and what you put on it—and what’s absorbed into your system—is important. Owner Kelly Sullivan of Splash Naturals (68 Main) has a background in health and nutrition, and an advanced certificate in herbal studies. This knowledge comes through via the skincare products Kelly carefully curates at Splash. Plus, Splash has cute clothes and comfy jammies!

From bulk staples like rice and oats to hard-to-find spices, sauces, cheeses, and meats, the Hunger Mountain Co-op (623 Stone Cutters Way) has everything you need for weeknight meals to gourmet show-stopping dinner parties. Vitamins and supplements, a killer wine and beer selection, and specialty diet prepared food options are just some of the reasons to make the trip down Stonecutters Way.

Where to Visit

Alpenglow Fitness (54 Main) is Montpelier’s boutique cycling and barre fitness studio. Whether you’re brand new to fitness, or training for an Ironwoman/man, Alpenglow’s classes will get you the cardio and strength training you need. The instructors are kind and motivational, and Alpenglow offers clean, modern facilities with Bose sound. Get your endorphins going with an efficient and effective 45-minute class.

The most direct path to bliss might just be a facial with Elizabeth England Studios (79 Main, Suite 3). Whether you need an entirely new skincare regimen, or if you just need a little pick-me-up to get your glow back, Elizabeth’s 60-, 90- and 120-minute facials will definitely do the trick. Reiki and makeup application available as well.

The online reviews describe her as the “lady with the magic hands,” and they’re right. Makiko Massage (100 State, Suite 230) is extremely skilled, offering Swedish/deep tissue massage, reflexology, craniosacral therapy, posture-coordinating exercise and prenatal massage. You might walk into Makiko’s office tense and stiff, but you’ll walk out looser, more relaxed, and happier. Reasonable rates and a beautiful space makes the entire experience utterly enjoyable.
